Devil May Cry’s Anime Was Secretly A Movie Trilogy All Along, And Season 3 Is The End
Netflix has announced that its animated Devil May Cry series has been renewed for a third season, which will also be its final season. The announcement comes with a revelation from showrunner Adi Shankar about the show’s long-term structure: it was designed as a movie trilogy disguised as a television series from the beginning.
Shankar explained that the series draws inspiration from Dante’s Divine Comedy, reimagined as “Dante’s Divine Comedy with guns and a red coat.” Each season corresponds to a section of the epic poem: Season 1 was “Inferno,” Season 2 was “Purgatorio,” and the upcoming Season 3 will be “Paradiso.” These three seasons collectively form what Shankar calls “The Force Edge Saga,” a cohesive story arc spanning the entire three-season run that was planned from its inception to function as a complete trilogy.
Shankar noted that careful viewers who paid attention to episode names could discern the series’ underlying structure throughout its run. The third and final season will bring the story of Dante to a conclusion, fulfilling the complete narrative arc that Shankar envisioned.
Studio Mir, known for its work on The Legend of Korra and X-Men ‘97, will return to handle the animation duties for the final season. The existing cast is expected to reprise their roles, ensuring continuity through the conclusion of this ambitious anime adaptation.
