Kratos will return in future games, God of War developer assures fans following the Laufey reveal
Following the June 2026 PlayStation State of Play reveal of God of War Laufey, Santa Monica Studio has clarified that Kratos remains central to the franchise’s future despite the upcoming spin-off shifting focus to a different protagonist.
God of War Laufey will be a narrative spin-off centered on Faye, Kratos’ wife, exploring her journey through the afterlife of the Gods and encounters with deities from various pantheons. The decision to make Faye the protagonist of the next major release prompted the developer to issue preemptive reassurances, with studio creative head Cory Barlog confirming in an official interview that “there’s always going to be Kratos games.”
Santa Monica Studio reinforced this commitment through official social media, stating the studio has “many more stories to tell” with the iconic protagonist. The developer’s emphasis on Kratos’ continued presence suggests that while Laufey will explore the expanded God of War universe beyond the main character, future mainline entries will return to the Spartan warrior as the central focus.
The mixed early reaction to God of War Laufey appears to have influenced the swift clarification, as some fans expressed concerns about the franchise’s direction following the Norse saga’s conclusion with Ragnarok. The spin-off model allows Santa Monica to expand its storytelling while maintaining fan confidence in the franchise’s core narrative direction.
