Nintendo Confirms New Switch 2 Hardware With Replaceable Battery
Nintendo has announced that revised Switch 2 models will feature removable and replaceable batteries to comply with new European Union regulations. The EU Batteries Legislation, passed in 2023, mandates that consumer products with built-in batteries must allow users to easily replace them at any time during the product’s lifespan. This regulation takes full effect on February 18, 2027.
Current Nintendo products designated with a “BEE” model number will be transitioned to “OSM” model numbers to meet compliance requirements. The Switch 2, which carries the BEE-01 designation, will receive this update, along with potentially the Joy-Con controllers. The new compliant models will be identifiable by their “OSM” designation on packaging.
The legislation aims to address electronic waste by extending the usable lifespan of battery-powered devices. Previously, deteriorating batteries often rendered products unusable and destined for disposal, even when other components remained functional. By mandating easily replaceable batteries, the regulation seeks to reduce e-waste and environmental impact while improving product longevity for consumers. Nintendo has confirmed its intention to comply with the regulations but has not yet announced specific release dates or availability details for the revised hardware.
