PS5’s Fairgames Dodged State of Play, But Could It Be Rebranded at Summer Game Fest?
Sony’s unannounced PS5 live-service title, previously referred to as Fairgames, appears to remain in development despite not appearing during this week’s State of Play presentation. Prior to the broadcast, multiple indicators suggested the game might be rebranded to “Break In,” including discovered trademarks and associated social media accounts.
The absence from State of Play is notable given prior expectations. While Sony did showcase Marathon—a live-service title from Bungie—during the event, no other live-service games received live presentation during the broadcast. This suggests Sony may have determined the State of Play format is not the appropriate venue for announcing such titles.
If development continues, the game will require an official re-reveal at some point. Summer Game Fest, hosted by Geoff Keighley, has emerged as a potential candidate for this announcement. Sony has a history of supporting Keighley’s events with various reveals, ranging from hardware announcements like DualSense controller reveals to major game unveilings, making it a viable platform for a live-service game announcement.
The situation reflects broader industry trends around presentation formats and announcement venues, with publishers increasingly evaluating whether traditional showcase events align with specific product categories and audience expectations.
