New PS5 Update Is Out Now, But Don’t Get Too Excited

Sony has released a new firmware update for PS5 consoles, bringing the system to version 26.04-13.40.00. The update, which weighs just over 1.2 GB, is rolling out in a phased release across regions including the UK.

The official patch notes are minimal, stating only: “We’ve improved system software performance and stability.” This marks another routine maintenance update for the platform, with no new user-facing features or significant changes announced.

While the brief patch notes provide limited detail, analysts speculate the update may serve multiple purposes. It could function as a security patch to prevent console hacking, or it may lay groundwork for more substantial updates—particularly an anticipated UI upgrade the community has been awaiting.

This update continues Sony’s pattern of regular firmware maintenance for the PS5. Recent updates have been more feature-rich, including version 26.03-13.20.00, which delivered an upgraded version of PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) specifically for PS5 Pro owners. Earlier updates added an improved Friends Activity widget, the ability to check console serial numbers, and power saver mode support for compatible games.

For now, players should not expect dramatic changes from this latest release. Instead, it represents behind-the-scenes optimization work designed to maintain console stability and security. Whether this update sets the stage for the rumored UI refresh will become clear in future releases.
