PS5 UK Sales Dropped by 50% in May

Sony’s PS5 has experienced a significant sales decline in the UK during May 2026, with hardware sales plummeting 50% in the region. According to Games Business journalist Chris Dring, the console managed to outsell Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S by only 400 units—a remarkably slim margin that underscores the severity of the drop.

The primary culprit appears to be Sony’s recently announced price increase for the PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal. The hike, attributed to rising component costs, has dampened consumer demand just as the console enters a critical phase of its lifecycle. Some industry analysts suggest that the price increase may have artificially boosted earlier sales as consumers rushed to purchase the console before the new pricing took effect.

In contrast, Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S saw a 12% sales increase during the same period, benefiting from the anticipated release of Forza Horizon 6. Nintendo’s Switch 2 outperformed both competitors without significant software catalyst, maintaining its position as a strong performer in the hardware market.

The decline marks a notable shift in the competitive landscape. The PS5 and Switch 2 had been alternating as the top-selling console, but May’s results suggest that Sony’s pricing strategy may have inadvertently handed market momentum to competitors. The 50% drop represents a substantial challenge for Sony, which has faced numerous headwinds throughout this generation, including pandemic-related supply shortages and tariff-related cost pressures.
