Fumito Ueda, legendary developer behind Shadow of the Colossus and Ico, announces single-player epic Gen Atlas for Xbox, PlayStation, and PC

Fumito Ueda, creator of Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian, has officially unveiled his next project at Summer Game Fest 2026: gen ATLAS, the first game from his studio genDESIGN.

Described as a single-player, open-world action-adventure, gen ATLAS marks a significant milestone in Ueda’s career—the first time a game from the legendary developer will not be exclusive to PlayStation. The title launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via the Epic Games Store, representing an industry shift for a creator long associated with Sony’s platform.

The game is set on an abandoned, desolate planet inhabited by colossal megastructures and mysterious robots. Players control a disembodied robot head that can pilot and take over various mech bodies across the landscape. The visual presentation is notably more colorful and features a hard sci-fi aesthetic compared to Ueda’s previous works, while maintaining the sense of quiet wonder and discovery his games are known for.

The project was originally revealed at The Game Awards 2024 under the codename “Project Robot.” genDESIGN was formed by Ueda alongside numerous developers who previously collaborated with him at Japan Studio before its closure. The studio aims to deliver an experience defined by exploring a world of overwhelming scale and derelict machinery.

No release date or launch window has been announced for gen ATLAS.
