As someone with over 1,000 hours in Guild Wars 2, I hope ArenaNet has a better plan this time around
ArenaNet has announced Guild Wars 3, the long-awaited sequel to its decade-old MMO, at Summer Game Fest. The announcement comes amid questions about the original game’s inconsistent expansion strategy.
Guild Wars 2 has struggled to maintain a steady expansion cadence throughout its ten-year lifespan, experimenting with various content release schedules that never achieved the consistent momentum players sought. This unpredictability created both cherished and disappointing moments for the community.
Long-time players have experienced memorable highs, such as the mapwide Dragon’s Stand boss encounter, which remains a treasured achievement for dedicated fans. However, the game also delivered notable lows—the Icebrood Saga conclusion stands out as a particularly striking example, where a multi-year narrative buildup culminated in an unexpectedly rushed and anticlimactic ending that disappointed the playerbase.
With Guild Wars 3 now in development, veteran players and the wider MMO community are hopeful that ArenaNet has developed a more effective long-term vision. The studio’s ability to learn from its predecessor’s missteps—particularly regarding content pacing and narrative payoff—will likely be critical to the sequel’s success. Whether Guild Wars 3 can deliver the consistent, well-planned experience that eluded its predecessor remains a central question as the game approaches release.
