Guild Wars 3 announced at Summer Game Fest, beta releasing in Fall 2027
ArenaNet officially announced Guild Wars 3 at Summer Game Fest, unveiling the next major entry in the long-running MMORPG franchise. The game will launch with a public beta in Fall 2027 and will be playable on both PC and PlayStation 5—marking the first console release for any Guild Wars title.
Described by ArenaNet CEO Colin Johanson as “an evolution” of the MMO genre, Guild Wars 3 promises to deliver “an entirely new type of MMO experience.” The game features a distinctive momentum-based combat system and emphasizes traversal mechanics, with gameplay trailers showcasing characters scaling cliffs and navigating open-world environments. The title will support both keyboard-mouse and gamepad controls, tuned for accessibility across platforms.
The game is set in the Tyrian region of Orr, a wilderness frontier dominated by magical entities called Vael spirits. Rather than the original Guild Wars timeline, Guild Wars 3 takes place 1,000 years before the first game, establishing its own narrative foundation. The story centers on conflict between various guilds competing over how to protect or exploit the natural resources and bounty of the frontier lands.
Guild Wars 3 will offer branching skillsets and deep character customization options, designed to provide more agency than traditional MMORPGs. ArenaNet positions the title as a response to millions of MMORPG players worldwide seeking fresh, modern experiences. Guild Wars 2, released over a decade ago, continues to maintain a dedicated player base, suggesting strong foundation for interest in the new mainline sequel.
