Merge Mansion dev Metacore lays off 159 employees, closes studios in Germany and Sweden

Mobile game developer Metacore has confirmed layoffs of 159 employees and the closure of its studios in Germany and Sweden as part of a major restructuring. The decision follows the company’s failure to launch successful new games, with its flagship title Merge Mansion having “plateaued over the past few years.”

The restructuring represents a significant downsizing for Metacore, which employs over 280 staff—meaning approximately 56% of the workforce is being cut. CEO Mika Tammenkoski stated the company has completed change negotiations and is working to support departing employees in finding new opportunities.

The restructuring coincides with Supercell’s completion of its full acquisition of Metacore, bringing the Merge Mansion developer into Supercell’s portfolio. Under new ownership, Metacore will focus its remaining resources on maintaining and developing Merge Mansion as a live-service title, rather than pursuing new game launches. Supercell, the Finnish publisher behind major franchises like Clash of Clans and Brawl Stars, will integrate Metacore’s operations into its existing live-games management structure.

The move marks another consolidation in the mobile gaming sector, reflecting broader industry challenges around sustaining multiple game portfolios and the increasing focus on live-service models rather than new IP development.
