These indie devs are so over algorithms they spent 1,500 hours listening to music on Bandcamp to compile the soundtrack
Metanet has announced N Plus Infinity Times Two, the sequel to its acclaimed platformer N++. The original game stood out in the industry for its distinctive Berlin techno soundtrack—an unusual choice for a video game at a time when most studios opt for chiptune or orchestral string arrangements.
For the follow-up, the developers have taken an unconventional approach to curating new music. Rather than working with a composer or licensing existing commercial tracks, the team spent 1,500 hours manually listening to and reviewing music on Bandcamp to compile a soundtrack that maintains the game’s signature sonic identity while shifting away from the Berlin techno sound of its predecessor.
According to Raigan Burns of Metanet, the team decided to explore different musical directions this time while keeping the niche, forward-thinking focus that made the original game’s audio landscape so memorable. The commitment to hand-curating the soundtrack from independent artists reflects the studio’s dedication to finding distinctive, non-conventional music that complements the game’s visual and mechanical design. This approach underscores how some independent developers are moving away from algorithmic recommendations and pre-existing genre conventions in favor of more intentional, personalized sonic curation for their projects.
