Cuphead 2 in the works at Studio MDHR, as well as a new arcade shooter based on the series
Studio MDHR has announced two new Cuphead games currently in development, as revealed at Summer Game Fest 2026. The first is a new hand-animated Cuphead sequel that will feature the beloved characters on a “fresh, exciting adventure.” However, the studio emphasized that this ambitious project is still in its earliest stages of development, with more details expected at a later date.
Complementing this announcement is Mighty Cuphead Adventure, an 8-bit action platformer being developed by a small team within MDHR. What sets this project apart is its authentic approach to retro gaming—the game is not simply styled to look like a classic 1980s title, but is actually programmed in Assembly Language and designed specifically for the SEGA Master System hardware of that era. The side-scrolling adventure will feature classic gameplay elements of running, jumping, and shooting through an 8-bit landscape.
Mighty Cuphead Adventure will be available on modern platforms including PlayStation 5 and PC, in addition to its SEGA Master System version, making it accessible to both contemporary and retro gaming audiences. The announcements were presented by Studio MDHR during Summer Game Fest in their characteristic style, featuring a puppet show presentation alongside gameplay footage of the retro platformer.
The news marks a significant moment for the independent studio, representing the first major project announcements in some time. While fans will have to wait for more information on the hand-animated sequel, Mighty Cuphead Adventure appears to be further along in development.
