The next Virtua Fighter finally got a proper name and a fancy trailer at Summer Game Fest

Sega officially unveiled Virtua Fighter Crossroads at Summer Game Fest, finally confirming the franchise’s next entry alongside a 2027 release date. The announcement featured a substantial story-focused trailer that surprised fans by revealing a full single-player campaign—a historic first for the traditionally competitive fighting game series.

The story mode is set in Vilasapara, a fictional South East Asian city centered around fighting culture. Players follow Cielo, an all-new character serving as the protagonist and replacing franchise icon Akira. The campaign features multiple interconnected character arcs, written by Brad Kane (Ghost of Tsushima) with oversight from David Hayter. The experience functions as a full action-adventure with side-quests and dynamic combat encounters where players face multiple opponents simultaneously, leveraging Virtua Fighter’s core fighting mechanics.

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, acclaimed for the narrative-driven Yakuza franchise, is developing Crossroads. Their storytelling expertise is immediately apparent in the trailers’ cinematic presentation, which prioritizes narrative over traditional fighting game action. This partnership marks a significant departure from Virtua Fighter’s historical focus on competitive one-on-one combat and has resonated with longtime fans who have long desired deeper story integration.

The announcement represents a major commitment from Sega to revitalize the franchise after an extended hiatus from mainstream gaming. A dedicated Virtua Fighter Showcase provided additional details about the expansive single-player experience.
