PSVR2 Fave Arizona Sunshine Sheds Virtual Reality, Goes Third-Person on PS5

Vertigo Games is adapting its popular PSVR2 exclusive Arizona Sunshine into a third-person console game for PS5, marking a significant departure from the original first-person VR experience. The new version abandons virtual reality entirely, adopting a Resident Evil-style third-person perspective to reach a broader audience beyond VR players.

As part of the transition, the developer has implemented a rebranding strategy: the new non-VR version retains the “Arizona Sunshine” title, while existing VR editions have been retroactively renamed “Arizona Sunshine VR.” This distinction clarifies the two divergent versions, though it creates cataloging challenges for game databases.

The shift from first-person VR to third-person traditional gameplay raises questions about the game’s core appeal. The original VR version relied heavily on the immersive novelty of virtual reality to engage players in zombie-shooting action. Without this distinctive characteristic, reviewers express skepticism about whether the third-person adaptation can maintain the same impact, describing the gameplay as potentially “static” compared to its VR counterpart.

Nevertheless, this move reflects industry trends of adapting successful VR titles for mainstream console audiences. By reimagining Arizona Sunshine for traditional PS5 players, Vertigo Games seeks to capitalize on the original’s popularity while accessing the significantly larger non-VR player base. The summer desert setting and zombie-shooting gameplay remain intact, though observers question whether these elements alone can compensate for the loss of VR’s immersive appeal.
