Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 DMZ First Details Tease a Feedback-Driven Extraction Experience

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will feature a significantly expanded take on DMZ, the extraction shooter mode first introduced as a beta in Modern Warfare 2 (2022). Launching October 23, 2026 alongside the main game, this new iteration represents Infinity Ward’s commitment to delivering what the studio calls “a proper DMZ” after four years of development and player feedback.

The mode introduces Hajin, a massive new map spanning three nations—South Korea, North Korea, and Russia—devastated by a nuclear reactor meltdown. Rather than a shallow side mode, DMZ functions as a full-featured game within Modern Warfare 4, offering a cohesive blend of PvE and PvP content with meaningful progression mechanics.

Key features include a bounty system that rewards player-versus-player encounters, a Forward Operating Base that serves as a persistent home base for customization and progression, crafting systems, story missions, and quests. Players approach objectives through multiple playstyles, with extraction mechanics requiring them to successfully escape the map while securing valuable loot.

Described by Infinity Ward’s multiplayer creative director as a “living sandbox,” DMZ emphasizes environmental storytelling within its war-torn setting. The mode has been designed to compete directly with other extraction shooters like Escape from Tarkov and ARC Raiders, positioning it as a genre leader rather than a secondary mode. Development has focused on learning from the original DMZ’s shortcomings while incorporating extensive community feedback, resulting in a significantly deeper and more persistent combat experience.
