RuneScape: Dragonwilds Devs Confirm No Prior MMO Experience Needed, Break Down Survival RPG Systems
Jagex has revealed that RuneScape: Dragonwilds represents one of the studio’s most significant departures from its long-running MMO franchise, blending survival gameplay mechanics with the company’s signature RPG systems while maintaining the recognizable RuneScape aesthetic and design philosophy.
The new title is set on a brand-new continent and features an original protagonist, deliberately positioned to appeal to both established RuneScape veterans and players completely unfamiliar with the franchise. Jagex has confirmed that no prior knowledge of the RuneScape universe is required to enjoy Dragonwilds, lowering the barrier to entry for newcomers.
During an interview at Summer Game Fest, Robert Galassi-Fox (Director of Product) and Rick Turek (Creative Director) discussed the game’s core systems and design philosophy. The developers outlined how the game implements a skill-based progression system adapted from classic RuneScape mechanics into a modern survival context. The conversation also covered the game’s co-op design features, development challenges encountered during production, and how the team approached translating the studio’s established gameplay philosophy into this new genre direction.
Dragonwilds marks a notable strategic shift for Jagex, moving away from the traditional MMO model that defined the RuneScape franchise for over two decades. The survival RPG hybrid approach suggests the developer is targeting a broader audience while leveraging its expertise in progression systems and player engagement mechanics. By welcoming both franchise veterans and complete newcomers, Jagex appears positioned to expand beyond its core RuneScape playerbase.
