The Alters Last Variable DLC revealed with a 20-hour campaign
11 Bit Studios has announced The Alters: Last Variable, a major expansion for the acclaimed 2025 strategy game The Alters. The DLC will deliver more than 20 hours of additional content—equivalent to the main game’s campaign length—and is set to release on PS5 on July 13, 2026.
The expansion takes place after the main game’s conclusion and follows Jan Scientist, a clone variant of protagonist Jan Dolski, who chose to remain on the alien world while the other versions escape. Jan Scientist pursues a research opportunity by exploring the mysterious Oasis, a fertile region untouched by the planet’s typical hostility.
Last Variable introduces new mechanics and a refined gameplay loop centered on terraforming. Players will transform volcanic soils into lush, oasis-like biomes while building and managing an underground base. The expansion weaves the game’s core themes into this new content by exploring aging and mortality—as players use cryosleep to advance time, their clone workforce grows older and deteriorates, adding meaningful stakes to long-term resource management decisions.
The planet itself becomes increasingly hostile to terraforming efforts, creating escalating challenges as the expansion progresses. This thematic layer—where worker clones age while time is artificially advanced—echoes The Alters’ central focus on tough moral choices and their consequences.
11 Bit Studios has supported The Alters since its 2025 launch with free updates including a mystery scenario and quality-of-life improvements. Last Variable represents a substantial paid expansion, though pricing has not yet been announced.
