Aion 2 producer says it’s good to have ‘friendly competition’ with Guild Wars 3 ‘during this period where MMOs are struggling’
NCSoft is preparing to launch two major MMOs in the coming months as the genre faces widespread struggles. Aion 2, which launched in Korea and Taiwan last year, is heading for a global release in September following a rocky initial launch plagued by pay-to-win mechanics that resulted in significant stock price losses for NCSoft. Despite these setbacks, the publisher is moving forward with the overseas release to capitalize on the global MMO market.
Simultaneously, ArenaNet-developed Guild Wars 3 was revealed at Summer Game Fest 2026, with a closed beta scheduled for late next year. The Aion 2 producer has commented positively on the prospect of competing with Guild Wars 3, describing it as “friendly competition” during what they acknowledge is “a period where MMOs are struggling.” This statement reflects broader industry challenges facing the MMO genre, which has seen declining player populations and increased competition from other gaming genres.
The dual release strategy highlights NCSoft’s commitment to the MMO space despite current market headwinds. Aion 2’s redemption arc will depend on whether NCSoft has addressed the monetisation concerns that plagued its Asian launch. Meanwhile, Guild Wars 3’s competitive positioning against Aion 2 and other established MMOs will test whether the franchise can attract and retain players in an increasingly competitive landscape.
