Gears of War: E-Day reportedly no longer coming to PlayStation 5

Microsoft has confirmed that Gears of War: E-Day, the upcoming prequel to the original 2007 Gears of War, will be an Xbox console exclusive and will not release on PlayStation 5. The game launches October 6, 2026, on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC, with day-one availability on Game Pass.

The news came during Microsoft’s Xbox Games Showcase, where new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced the exclusivity. This marks a significant shift in strategy, as the game was reportedly in development for PS5 until very recently. Gaming journalist Jeff Grubb revealed on the Giant Bomb podcast that the decision to cancel the PlayStation version was made just days or weeks before the announcement. Evidence supporting this includes PEGI ratings that listed PS5 as a platform and physical PS5 SKUs found in retailer databases, suggesting the version was nearly complete.

Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel set fourteen years before the original game, following Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the Locust Horde emerges from underground on Emergence Day. Gameplay footage shows the characters navigating city streets with limited weaponry as civilization collapses.

The exclusivity decision is notable given Microsoft’s recent trend of bringing major first-party titles to PlayStation, including Halo: Campaign Evolved and Fable. The move signals a potential return to console exclusivity as a competitive strategy under new leadership. While E-Day is exclusive to Xbox consoles, it remains available on PC and Steam.
