Forget About Virtual Reality, Into the Dead: Crimson Heights is Hyper Reality | IGN Live

Into the Dead: Crimson Heights, revealed at IGN Live, has been announced as the first “hyper reality” horror game. The title represents the fourth entry in the Into the Dead franchise, following several mobile installments and a 2025 side-scrolling spinoff called Our Darkest Days. This release marks the franchise’s inaugural foray into VR and hyper reality gaming.

What distinguishes hyper reality from traditional VR in this case is the Meta Quest 3’s integrated environmental scanning technology. The headset’s camera maps the player’s actual physical surroundings, enabling the game to overlay horror elements directly onto the user’s real home environment rather than presenting a fully virtual world. According to the reveal trailer, household objects such as desks and couches are visually transformed and incorporated into the game’s horror aesthetic, effectively turning players’ actual living spaces into part of the game world.

This approach represents a novel application of mixed reality technology in horror gaming, leveraging the Quest 3’s ability to blend digital content seamlessly with real-world environments to create an immersive experience that transcends traditional VR boundaries.
