Metro 2039 goes to war with the underground’s Führer in a moody first gameplay trailer, as February 2027 release window confirmed
4A Games’ upcoming Metro 2039 will launch in February 2027, narrowing down its previously announced winter release window. The game returns the series to its post-apocalyptic horror roots, set in the Moscow Metro system where survivors of a nuclear apocalypse attempt to carve out an existence beneath the radioactive surface of Moscow.
The game follows the Stranger, a fully voiced protagonist—a first for the series—who is plagued by nightmarish visions. When reluctantly returning to the grim subterranean world, the Stranger discovers the underground is controlled by the Novoreich, a fascist faction led by Hunter, a legendary Spartan and former ally of series protagonist Artyom. The antagonist reveal suggests a morally complex narrative where not everything may be as it seems.
The gameplay trailer, revealed at Xbox Games Showcase, emphasizes the game’s dark, gritty atmosphere and creepy environments, drawing comparisons to the original Metro 2033’s linear survival horror FPS approach. The game is shaping up to be a moody, atmospheric experience that leans heavily into horror elements and the bleakness of the underground setting.
