Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ extraction mode gets an action-packed trailer at the Xbox showcase

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s extraction shooter mode, DMZ, has been fully revealed at Xbox’s showcase, marking a significant revival of the extraction genre for the franchise.

Originally introduced as a free-to-play beta in Modern Warfare II in 2022, DMZ was largely overshadowed by Warzone and failed to gain significant traction. However, with the rising popularity of extraction-focused games like Escape from Tarkov and Arc Raiders, Activision is repositioning DMZ as a core pillar of Modern Warfare 4, alongside the campaign and multiplayer modes.

The new iteration takes place in a Korean map called Hajin and continues the story of the Modern Warfare 4 campaign. Players will navigate dynamic weather conditions while contending with AI-controlled enemies that coordinate and react to player actions, as well as enemy vehicles. The mode introduces a player bounty system and features expanded squad mechanics, including the ability to drag and revive teammates.

Notably, DMZ will no longer be free-to-play in Modern Warfare 4, suggesting Activision intends to position it as a premium feature within the base game rather than a separate experience. This strategic shift reflects the industry’s broader embrace of extraction gameplay, with Infinity Ward apparently committed to providing substantial ongoing support for the mode post-launch.
