Ninja Theory reveals Hellblade 3, except it’s named Senua because it’s evolved into something else - a full action-adventure game

Ninja Theory announced a new entry in the Hellblade franchise at the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, titled simply Senua. Rather than naming it Hellblade 3, the studio emphasized that this represents a significant departure from its predecessors.

Studio head Dom Matthews described Senua as “a bold new step” and an “out-and-out action-adventure game” that marks a strategic pivot away from the heavily cinematic approach of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2. The new direction prioritizes gameplay-centric experience with expanded mechanics and greater player agency.

The game introduces features previously absent or underdeveloped in the series, including stealth mechanics, multiple-enemy combat, enhanced exploration, puzzle-solving depth, and varied weapon systems. Despite these gameplay expansions, Ninja Theory maintains the franchise’s core identity: intimate storytelling, high production values, and artistic vision. Protagonist Senua returns with the signature whispering voices reflecting her psychological struggles.

Senua launches in 2027 on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PlayStation 5, with availability on Xbox Game Pass. Significantly, Ninja Theory’s entire 85-person studio is collaborating on this project together for the first time in over a decade—underscoring the importance of this new direction. The shift positions Senua as a more action-focused experience, potentially competing with franchises like God of War while preserving the series’ distinctive identity.
