Sonic Pico Park preview: a fun yet frustrating surprise new Sonic game
Sega has announced a new Sonic the Hedgehog spinoff game titled Sonic Pico Park, developed in collaboration with indie studio Tecopark. Rather than a traditional mainline sequel or retro platformer, the game adapts the formula of Tecopark’s successful multiplayer title Pico Park to feature Sonic and his universe.
The project represents Sega’s recent strategy of partnering with small indie developers who have proven success in their genres. Sonic Pico Park is a multiplayer-focused experience that retains the core gameplay mechanics of the original Pico Park series while integrating Sonic-themed content and characters.
Hands-on impressions from Summer Game Fest show the game features cooperative multiplayer levels, with attendees playing through eight stages with a squad of four players. While the game doesn’t dramatically reinvent Pico Park’s existing formula, previews indicate it delivers a lighthearted gaming experience designed to appeal to Sonic fans seeking a casual, entertaining title.
The collaboration signals Sega’s willingness to take creative risks with its major franchises by entrusting them to external developers rather than developing everything in-house. The game is confirmed to release sometime in 2026.
