Spyro: A Realm Beyond brings the beloved purple dragon back into the spotlight at the Xbox Games showcase

Spyro the Dragon is making his triumphant return with Spyro: A Realm Beyond, announced at the Xbox Games Showcase 2026. Developed by Toys for Bob, the game will launch in spring 2027 across Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, with day-one availability on Xbox Game Pass.

This marks the first original Spyro game in nearly 20 years, following 2008’s The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon. The last mainline experience was the 2018 Spyro: Reignited Trilogy, a remake collection also developed by Toys for Bob that revitalized the franchise after years of Skylanders spin-offs.

The centerpiece of A Realm Beyond is “true dragon flight”—a bold new mechanic allowing Spyro full freedom in the skies rather than gliding or navigating predetermined flight levels. This represents the series’ most significant gameplay evolution, with an aged-up Spyro featuring notably larger wings. Studio head Paul Yan acknowledged the development challenge, noting that few games tackle this combination of verticality and flight freedom, with comparisons existing mainly to flight simulators and Iron Man-style gameplay, though the mechanics are fundamentally different.

The narrative sees Spyro stranded and tasked with protecting a mysterious realm from an invading force called the Scavs. Original voice actor Tom Kenny reprises his iconic role, returning enthusiastically despite his current prominence voicing SpongeBob SquarePants. Toys for Bob approached Kenny directly rather than holding open auditions, reflecting the studio’s desire to honor the character’s legacy.
