Fumito Ueda knows that you’re worried about Gen Atlas’s framerate
Fumito Ueda’s highly anticipated new game Gen Atlas received a trailer on Friday, generating largely positive reactions from fans excited about a new title from the acclaimed director a decade after The Last Guardian. However, the trailer also sparked concerns among viewers about the game’s framerate performance.
Ueda acknowledged these concerns, stating “We did our best we could in delivering this trailer for this moment.” The framerate discussion reflects a pattern in Ueda’s previous work: Shadow of the Colossus on PlayStation 2 ran below 30 frames per second as a technical tradeoff to deliver the game’s ambitious scale and physics-driven world. Similarly, The Last Guardian required workarounds to achieve 60 fps when played on PlayStation 5.
The performance debate highlights the ongoing tension between visual ambition and technical optimization in modern game development. Ueda’s games have historically prioritized artistic vision and large-scale environmental design over frame rate targets, and it appears Gen Atlas may follow a similar philosophy.
