Guild Wars 3 will have no battle pass or subscription because ArenaNet studio lead doesn’t want to “keep people hostage”

Guild Wars 3 has been officially revealed with studio head Collin Johanson confirming the highly anticipated sequel will eschew industry-standard monetisation practices. The game will feature no mandatory subscription or battle pass system, instead being available as a premium purchase similar to previous entries in the series. This decision reflects ArenaNet’s philosophy about the MMO genre, with Johanson emphasizing the studio’s goal to allow players to enjoy the game “as much or as little” as they want without feeling pressured by live-service mechanics.

The monetisation approach represents a significant departure from contemporary MMO trends. Johanson highlighted ArenaNet’s rejection of design patterns that can make games feel like “second jobs” requiring substantial life commitment. Rather than employing tactics designed to keep players “hostage,” the studio aims to create a more player-friendly experience.

The revelation came during an IGN Live interview following Guild Wars 3’s presentation at Summer Game Fest. ArenaNet has confirmed its commitment to supporting Guild Wars 2 even after Guild Wars 3’s launch, with the studio planning to develop both titles concurrently. The first beta tests for Guild Wars 3 are scheduled for 2027, following the successful template that defined the franchise’s previous transitions.
