Microsoft Build ignored the most barren part of Windows 11, and it’s one only third-party developers can fix

Microsoft’s Build conference prioritized AI agents and tools for developing native Windows applications, alongside improvements to Windows 11 as part of the Windows K2 initiative. However, one significant aspect of Windows 11 received no attention from the company: the Widgets panel.

The Widgets panel, accessible via the weather icon in the taskbar’s bottom-left corner, has been identified as one of Windows 11’s weakest features. Despite widespread recognition of its shortcomings, Microsoft made no announcements regarding improvements or updates to the Widgets functionality during the conference.

This oversight highlights a gap in Microsoft’s platform enhancement strategy, leaving the feature’s future development to third-party developers. The Widgets panel remains a largely neglected component of Windows 11, despite being a visible and frequently accessed element of the operating system.
