Netflix Reveals the Real Dog Playing Scooby-Doo in Upcoming Origins Series

Netflix has announced its upcoming live-action Scooby-Doo: Origins series with a historic casting decision: for the first time in the franchise’s nearly 60-year history, the character of Scooby-Doo will be played by an actual dog rather than animation or computer-generated imagery. The role will be taken by a Great Dane, marking a significant departure from previous live-action adaptations of the beloved mystery-solving franchise.

The series, currently in production in Atlanta, will feature a cast of young actors portraying the iconic Mystery Inc. gang. McKenna Grace will play Daphne Blake, Tanner Hagen will take on the role of Shaggy Rogers, Abby Ryder Fortson will portray Velma Dinkley, and Maxwell Jenkins will play Fred Jones.

While Scooby-Doo has appeared in live-action projects before, including the early-2000s theatrical films starring Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar, those adaptations relied on computer-generated imagery to bring the talking Great Dane to screen. This new approach represents a creative shift for the franchise, opting for practical effects with a real animal rather than digital recreation.
