I’ve played Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy and it’s very different to Requiem and Innocence - but that’s not necessarily a bad thing
Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, the third installment in the Plague Tale series, marks a significant departure from its predecessors. Developed by Asobo and published by Focus Entertainment, the game was announced during the Xbox Games Showcase in June.
The most notable change is the removal of stealth gameplay, which was central to the previous two games in the franchise. Instead, Resonance fully embraces an action-adventure formula, featuring combat inspired by challenging melee games like Sekiro and Sifu. While stealth is gone, the game retains puzzles and platforming as key gameplay components.
Set in 1333 on a mysterious island near Crete—a departure from the plague-ridden France of previous entries—Resonance follows Sophia, a character introduced in A Plague Tale: Requiem as a mentor figure. The game is set 15 years before the events of the main games and explores the origins of the Prima Macula, an ancient curse tied to certain bloodlines. The protagonist is no longer the series’ familiar pair, Hugo and Amicia.
Preview impressions from journalists who played the beta indicate that while Resonance plays very differently from its predecessors, it remains distinctly a Plague Tale game. The combat is described as “scrappy” rather than polished, with Sophia fighting in a dirty, unrefined manner. However, one notable absence noted by players is the reduction or removal of the iconic rat swarms that were a signature element of previous games.
Despite its significant stylistic shift, early hands-on experiences suggest the game shows promise and successfully establishes itself within the franchise’s universe, even as it reinvents its core gameplay mechanics.
