Resident Evil Veronica is the remake I’m most excited about, because the original was such a mess

Capcom has officially unveiled a remake of Resident Evil Code: Veronica, applying the RE Engine to the classic 2000 original. The game, originally released for sixth-generation consoles, is regarded as an important and influential entry in the franchise despite notable gameplay issues that have not aged well by modern standards.

The original Code: Veronica is notably burdened with tedious design elements including excessive backtracking, bullet-sponge boss encounters that frustrate modern players, and a clunky shared inventory system that can lead to permanent loss of critical items. In contrast to other recent Resident Evil remakes—RE2, RE3, and RE4—which have aged relatively well, Code: Veronica stands to significantly benefit from a comprehensive visual and mechanical modernization through the RE Engine.

The remake demonstrates Capcom’s continued strategy of reimagining classic franchise entries with contemporary technology and refined game design sensibilities. The RE Engine has proven effective for recent Resident Evil titles and will likely comprehensively address the original’s notable gameplay friction points and design flaws while preserving its core experience, atmosphere, and narrative elements.
