One of the biggest VR developers in the business closes a studio: ‘The VR market remains a challenging space’
Vertigo Games, a leading VR developer, has closed its Amsterdam studio amid challenging market conditions. The company, responsible for prominent virtual reality titles including Arizona Sunshine VR, The 7th Guest VR, Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow, and Metro Awakening, cited ongoing VR market challenges as the reason for the decision.
CEO Richard Stitselaar remarked: “The VR market remains a challenging space, and after careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to close Vertigo Studios Amsterdam.” The closure represents a significant moment for the VR industry, as Vertigo Games had maintained its VR-exclusive focus for years.
Interestingly, the company is diversifying beyond virtual reality—both its latest release and upcoming projects are non-VR titles, suggesting a strategic pivot in response to market pressures. The studio closure impacts employees at the Amsterdam location, with the statement acknowledging “the impact it has on everyone at Vertigo Studios Amsterdam.”
