Xbox seeks to clarify its approach to console exclusive games, after last night’s PS5 snub for Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution caught many off guard

Microsoft has announced a partial return to Xbox console exclusives, creating confusion about the company’s platform strategy. During its Games Showcase, Xbox revealed that Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution will be exclusive to Xbox consoles, never launching on PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch 2, though both will release on PC. The announcement surprised many, as Gears of War: E-Day was expected to come to PS5 until the moment of the showcase reveal—the game remained listed as a PS5 release in PEGI ratings just before its trailer aired, apparently catching retailers off guard.

The exclusivity decision represents a significant reversal of Xbox’s recent multiplatform direction. Over the past two years, Microsoft has increasingly published first-party titles like Forza Horizon 5, The Outer Worlds 2, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle on competing platforms. To justify the shift, Xbox executives including Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball and Chief Content Officer Matt Booty stated that future exclusivity decisions will be made on a “case-by-case basis,” with this announcement marking the “start of a program” offering a “reliable pipeline” of console exclusives.

Yet the messaging remains muddled. Xbox confirmed that large multiplayer and live-service games will remain multiplatform, while titles already announced for other platforms—including Halo Campaign Evolved, Fable, and Minecraft Dungeons 2—will still launch on PS5. This contradiction has frustrated industry observers who note Microsoft has failed to clearly articulate its exclusivity criteria. While executives promise additional exclusives will come, the lack of coherent strategy suggests Xbox will face ongoing criticism as it attempts to balance appeasing core fans wanting platform exclusivity against the business appeal of broader multiplatform releases.
