007 First Light Sequel Sounds Like A Matter Of When, Not If
007 First Light, the latest James Bond game developed and published by IO Interactive, has become a major commercial success, selling three million copies within two weeks of its late May launch. Following the game’s strong performance and positive critical reception, questions have naturally emerged about the future of the franchise now that Amazon owns the James Bond gaming rights.
Initially, Amazon Games boss Jeff Gattis’s comments regarding the franchise’s future sparked confusion within the gaming community. In discussions about potential sequel development, Gattis suggested that future Bond titles could be handled by MGM and Amazon Game Studios, inadvertently creating concerns that IO Interactive might be sidelined from upcoming projects.
However, Gattis has since clarified his previous statements, emphasizing that he never confirmed Amazon Game Studios would directly publish the next James Bond game. Speaking with IGN at Summer Game Fest, the Amazon Games head stressed that the relationship between IO Interactive and Amazon Games remains strong, while also suggesting that a sequel to 007 First Light is inevitable rather than uncertain.
Gattis indicated that developing another Bond game “should be made” and characterized the prospect of a sequel as “a matter of when, not if.” These remarks effectively settled speculation about whether the franchise would continue, while also providing reassurance that IO Interactive’s partnership with Amazon Games will likely remain intact.
The clarification comes as welcome news to fans eager for a follow-up to 007 First Light, and it suggests that Amazon intends to build on the current momentum rather than dramatically alter the proven formula that led to the game’s success.
