Amazon committed to developing Lord of the Rings game, is “evaluating different concepts”
Amazon Games remains committed to developing a Lord of the Rings video game despite last month’s reports that its MMO project had been cancelled. Jeff Gattis, head of Amazon Games, told IGN that “nothing’s been cancelled per se” and clarified that the company is actively evaluating multiple game concepts for the franchise.
Gattis indicated that Amazon is engaged in an exploratory phase to determine the right direction for a Lord of the Rings game, both for its target audience and the broader gaming market. He highlighted that the team recently reviewed a project he found “quite compelling” that could potentially move forward, suggesting the company is making progress despite the apparent shift away from the originally planned MMO.
The statement represents a clarification of Amazon’s position following speculation about the fate of its Lord of the Rings game initiative. Rather than abandoning the franchise rights, the company appears to be pivoting toward different gameplay concepts and formats that may better suit current market conditions and audience preferences.
