“It’s a choice” - A Plague Tale developer Asobo doesn’t believe smaller teams need to use gen-AI to compete

French developer Asobo, known for the A Plague Tale series and Microsoft Flight Simulator, has stated that smaller game development teams do not need to rely on generative AI tools to compete with larger studios.

Eric Chort, producer of Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, made the remarks at a recent press event, citing the studio’s own success with small teams across the series. A Plague Tale: Innocence was created by approximately 40 developers, while its sequel A Plague Tale: Requiem and the upcoming Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy were developed by teams of around 70 people each. Despite the relatively small team sizes compared to major AAA studios, the series has been critically acclaimed for its cinematic action-adventure gameplay.

Asobo’s position represents a counterpoint to ongoing industry discussions about whether smaller studios must adopt AI tools to remain competitive. The developer’s track record suggests that strong creative vision, skilled teams, and focused development can achieve commercial and critical success without relying on generative AI.
