Destiny 2 Player Count Soars Above Marathon’s Highest Ever As Guardians Log On For Final Update

Destiny 2 has received its final live-service update with the Monument of Triumph, released on June 9, 2026, after nearly 12 years of development and support. The update has prompted a massive resurgence of players, with the game reaching its highest concurrent player count since the June 2024 Episode: Echoes launch.

According to Steam data, Destiny 2 peaked at between 160,000 and 167,000 concurrent players on its launch day, making it the most-played the game has been in over two years. This surge even surpassed Marathon’s all-time peak player count of approximately 88,000. While still lower than The Final Shape expansion’s 314,000-player peak in 2024, the numbers represent a dramatic resurgence from April 2026, when the game struggled to maintain 13,000 concurrent players.

The influx of players logging on to experience the final update has been so significant that some users reported server connection issues and errors while trying to authenticate. The Destiny community has responded enthusiastically to this conclusion of the game’s live-service era, with players returning to bid farewell to the beloved sci-fi shooter.

Developer Bungie has confirmed that while Destiny 2’s servers will remain active and playable for the foreseeable future, no new content will be released. The studio plans to focus on incubating future projects, though there is no indication of a Destiny 3 in development. Monument of Triumph serves as both a celebration of the franchise’s 12-year history and a final gift to the dedicated player base that has sustained the game through multiple cycles of decline and revival.
