We’re getting our first HD-2D Final Fantasy game, and it’s based on the now-shuttered mobile title Brave Exvius

Square Enix announced Final Fantasy Resonance during the June 2026 Nintendo Direct presentation, marking the first mainline Final Fantasy game to embrace the HD-2D visual style that has become popular in recent Square Enix releases. The turn-based JRPG will launch on October 22, 2026, across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2.

Final Fantasy Resonance draws its foundation from Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius, the long-running mobile game that shut down in 2024. However, Square Enix emphasizes this is not a straightforward port or remake—instead, the console version extensively rebuilds and reimagines the mobile game’s first season story, introducing new narrative elements and delivering what the publisher describes as “an experience far richer in both quality and scope.”

The game returns to the franchise’s roots with classic turn-based combat, traditional overworld exploration, and iconic Final Fantasy elements like chocobos, airships, and crystals central to the world. Notably, it will feature cameo appearances from characters across Final Fantasy history, including Cloud from Final Fantasy VII. The game is positioned as a celebration of the broader Final Fantasy legacy while maintaining its own identity through new summons and gameplay mechanics.
