Gears of War: E-Day Could Be the First UE5 Game to Fulfil the Engine’s Promise

Microsoft showcased Gears of War: E-Day at its Xbox Games Showcase, positioning the title as potentially the first game to fully realize Unreal Engine 5’s technical promise. Developed by The Coalition, E-Day demonstrates significant graphical achievements including large-scale, detailed environments without pop-in, crisp image quality, extensive ray-traced lighting via hardware Lumen, extended view distances, prominent environmental damage, and a 60fps performance target.

E-Day arrives at a critical juncture for the franchise. The previous two Gears of War releases reportedly underperformed commercially, making this entry a significant reset attempt for the series. The Coalition has had seven years since the last mainline Gears entry to develop the game, providing substantial development time despite an interim remaster being released more recently.

The game’s technical showcase represents an inflection point for Unreal Engine 5 adoption, with The Coalition’s well-documented expertise in optimization positioning them to deliver on the engine’s ambitious promise of seamless, expansive worlds rendered at high performance targets.
