ArenaNet Boss Says MMOs Have ‘Stagnated’ and Guild Wars 3 Will Offer the Genre Something Genuinely New

ArenaNet announced Guild Wars 3 at Summer Game Fest 2026, with studio head Colin Johanson declaring that the upcoming MMO will challenge a “stagnated” genre. The announcement underscores ArenaNet’s long history of defying MMO industry conventions.

The original Guild Wars (2005) notably eschewed the subscription fees that dominated the genre, while Guild Wars 2 (2012) pioneered horizontal progression systems that departed from traditional gear grinds. Guild Wars 3 continues this counter-trend philosophy.

In interviews at the event, Johanson emphasized that the game will avoid predatory monetization tactics. Most significantly, he stated that Guild Wars 3 will not include a battle pass system and that ArenaNet won’t “hold their time hostage”—a direct critique of modern live service practices that gate seasonal content behind paid progressions and time-limited structures.

This positioning starkly contrasts with current MMO trends, where battle pass systems have become standard monetization. While some games like World of Warcraft have implemented cosmetic-focused, free battle pass alternatives, many competitors treat them as primary revenue drivers.

ArenaNet’s stance suggests Guild Wars 3 will maintain the franchise’s tradition of proving that major MMO experiences can thrive without aggressive live service mechanics that have become industry standard.
