Sony Pictures’ Helldivers movie has lost Jason Momoa as its lead, just months after announcing the star’s involvement
Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions’ upcoming Helldivers movie adaptation has lost its star actor Jason Momoa, just months after announcing his involvement. The Fast & Furious veteran Justin Lin remains attached to direct the film, which is targeting a November 10, 2027 release date.
Momoa, known for his roles in Aquaman and The Minecraft Movie, was announced earlier this year to headline the video game adaptation, but according to Deadline, he has since departed the project. The reason for his exit remains undisclosed. Sony is now actively searching for a replacement lead actor to carry the film, alongside casting the rest of the ensemble.
The Helldivers movie was initially announced in January 2025 as part of PlayStation Productions’ broader efforts to adapt its successful gaming properties for film and television. The project’s timeline remains tight, with less than 20 months until its scheduled theatrical release. Industry observers have speculated the film could deliver a modern take on sci-fi action similar to Starship Troopers, given the source material’s themes.
The departure marks an early setback for the adaptation, though the project is reportedly moving forward with production planning. With the core creative team of director Justin Lin still involved, Sony will be looking to secure a prominent actor capable of anchoring a major video game adaptation.
