Where Would You Rank Nintendo Direct vs The Other Summer Showcases?

Nintendo held its first full Nintendo Direct in nine months on June 9, 2026, following other major summer gaming showcases. The 50-minute presentation featured nearly 50 games and announcements across Switch and Switch 2 platforms.

The showcase headlined a brief teaser of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake for Switch 2, scheduled for 2026 release, and Kingdom Hearts 4, which will launch simultaneously on Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox. Additional first-party highlights included updates for Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, Pokémon Pokopia expansion content, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, and announcements of Switch 2 editions for Xenoblade Chronicles 1, 2, and 3, plus a new entry titled Xenoblade Genesis.

Third-party presence was substantial, featuring ports and releases like Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and Metaphor Re:Fantazio, alongside a new turn-based Final Fantasy game coming later in 2026. The Direct also announced Rhythm Heaven Groove and Splatoon Raiders.

Despite the volume of announcements, critics responded mixed to the showcase. While acknowledging solid presentations, reviewers felt the Direct fell short of expectations for a major summer showcase, with first-party offerings mostly consisting of smaller updates rather than major reveals. The brief Ocarina of Time tease particularly disappointed some given its planned 2026 release, as more substantial detail was expected.
