Nintendo just justified that controversial Switch price hike
The Nintendo Switch is approaching a decade in the market, with the Switch 2 having launched just a year prior. Despite being succeeded by newer hardware, Nintendo continues to support the original console, a strategy highlighted in its June 2026 Direct presentation. The showcase opened with an eccentric rhythm game coming to both Switch consoles, emphasizing cross-platform availability and multi-generational support.
While Switch 2 owners will receive exclusive titles including Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, The Duskbloods, and Splatoon Raiders, the presentation revealed surprisingly extensive backwards compatibility. Many upcoming Switch 2 games will also run on the original Switch hardware, effectively extending the commercial viability of the aging console.
This broad multi-generational support strategy appears designed to justify the Switch 2’s controversial higher price point by ensuring players have access to a robust library spanning both systems. Rather than abandoning the original console like competitors did with their prior generations, Nintendo maintains relevance for both platforms while promoting the Switch 2 successor, offering players flexibility in their hardware choices.
