The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’s rumoured Switch 2 remake is real, but all we’re getting is a teaser for now

Nintendo has officially confirmed the long-rumored remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2, announced during the June 9, 2026 Nintendo Direct. The remake will release later this year, marking the Zelda series’ 40th anniversary and the first major franchise entry since 2024’s Echoes of Wisdom.

The announcement came in the form of a brief teaser trailer that showed little beyond atmospheric storytelling—a tapestry depicting Hyrule’s history, narration about the Deku Tree and the Kokiri people, and a look at young Link sleeping. The teaser featured the iconic Ocarina of Time musical motif but revealed no gameplay footage or specific release date. Nintendo promised more details would be shared later in 2026.

This is the third iteration of the 1998 N64 classic, following its 2011 Nintendo 3DS remake. The new version features a significant visual overhaul, adopting a more modern, high-fidelity aesthetic that notably departs from the abstract style of recent mainline entries Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

The remake’s existence had been widely rumored since March 2026, when prominent leaker Nate the Hate first reported it—a prediction that proved accurate after Nintendo also confirmed a Star Fox remake in May.

The announcement generated mixed reactions. While many celebrated the confirmation, others criticized Nintendo’s approach, noting the teaser’s divisive art direction and lack of gameplay footage undermined what could have been a surprising reveal if rumors hadn’t preceded it. Some fans expressed frustration over the minimal information and vague release window, hoping for more substantial details in future presentations.
