Airbender creator says AAA Avatar RPG wasn’t ‘canceled,’ promises news in July
Despite previous optimism around the Avatar franchise, recent developments have presented challenges. Following an online leak of the upcoming film Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, news emerged that Paramount Games had terminated a major Avatar role-playing game project in development at Saber Interactive, the studio behind Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine.
The AAA action-RPG was initially announced in 2024 as an ambitious entry into the Avatar universe. Rather than featuring established characters such as Aang or Korra, the game was designed around an original protagonist—a “never-before-seen Avatar”—allowing players to experience a fresh story. The narrative was set thousands of years in the past within an unexplored region of the Avatar world, positioning players to “master all four elements” while engaging in “dynamic combat alongside companions” in a vibrant, immersive setting.
However, the series creator has reframed the situation, suggesting the project was not entirely canceled but rather redirected. The creator has committed to providing further updates regarding the game’s status in July, leaving open the possibility for revival or reimagining of the project.
