Elder Scrolls 6 Was Announced 8 Years Ago Today, Here’s Why It Didn’t Show Up At Xbox Showcase
The Elder Scrolls 6 marked its eighth anniversary of announcement on June 10, 2026, with remarkably little to show for the elapsed time. The game was first revealed at E3 2018 with a brief teaser containing minimal information, and in the eight years since, Bethesda has shared virtually no updates, new footage, or official commentary beyond occasional brief remarks.
The franchise’s long silence continued at last week’s Xbox Games Showcase 2026, where fans anticipated news on the upcoming sequel to Skyrim. Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty addressed the conspicuous absence in a recent Variety interview, explaining the strategic reasoning behind withholding announcements.
Booty stated that he has visited Bethesda and observed the game in progress, offering reassurance that “it looks amazing and it’s coming along well.” He emphasized that the timing of reveals requires careful consideration—balancing fan excitement against the risk of showing titles prematurely. Microsoft intends to announce the game “at the right time,” when the project is sufficiently advanced to warrant a full reveal.
Todd Howard, Bethesda’s game director, has previously acknowledged that The Elder Scrolls 6 was announced before serious development commenced, a decision that now appears to weigh on the studio. The game will utilize Creation Engine 3, the latest version of the engine powering Skyrim and Fallout 4.
The announcement provides minimal timeline clarity. While Booty’s comments suggest active development progress, Howard has indicated release remains years away, leaving fans with considerable uncertainty about when a proper reveal might occur.
