Fallout 76 Players Could Become Super Mutants, But Only If It Makes Sense
Fallout 76 could potentially expand its playable character options to include new races such as Super Mutants or Mole Miners, according to Bethesda Game Studios.
The studio was asked at Summer Game Fest whether players could eventually create characters as alternative races in the game. While Bethesda has already implemented a Ghoul playable option, the developers indicated they are open to further expanding character variety. However, any additional playable races would only be added “if it makes sense,” suggesting that design and narrative considerations would guide such decisions.
The statement indicates Bethesda is willing to explore more unusual character archetypes in Fallout 76, moving beyond traditional human characters. Players have expressed interest in more diverse options, including becoming intelligent Super Mutants, Synths, or robots like Assaultrons. The developer’s cautious approach suggests they would evaluate any new playable races carefully to ensure they align with the game’s design philosophy and lore.
