Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director confirms that Midgar is back, but smaller
Final Fantasy VII Revelation will feature a redesigned version of the iconic city of Midgar, according to director Naoki Hamaguchi in an interview with Polygon. While players will be able to return to Midgar as part of the game’s open-world format, the city has been significantly adjusted and scaled down to accommodate exploration in an open world, a major departure from Final Fantasy VII Remake where the entire game took place within Midgar.
The original PS1 Final Fantasy VII’s Midgar is a walled city sitting beneath an enormous plate. Translating this linear, enclosed environment to an open-world design presents unique challenges for the development team. Hamaguchi teased that a key moment from the original game will be recreated in Revelation, suggesting the developers are balancing series nostalgia with the demands of the new open-world structure.
This represents one of several major changes coming to Final Fantasy VII Revelation as the series transitions from a Midgar-focused experience to broader world exploration. The adaptation of previously linear areas for open-world standards appears to be a central consideration in the game’s design.
