Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski believes Xbox is “steering the ‘ship’ back in the right direction”, as E-Day skips PS5

Gears of War: E-Day will launch as an Xbox console exclusive, skipping PlayStation 5. The decision surprised many in the gaming community, as Microsoft has been increasingly willing to release its first-party titles on competing platforms in recent years. Games like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Sea of Thieves have found success on PlayStation, and last year’s Gears of War: Reloaded launched across both Xbox and PS5, setting expectations for E-Day’s multi-platform release.

The confusion was further fueled by a PEGI rating for a PS5 version that appeared online before the Xbox Games Showcase. However, The Coalition studio has insisted that E-Day was never officially in development for PlayStation 5, despite the leaked rating. The studio’s creative director Matt Searcy stated the team “never talked about” bringing the game to Sony’s console.

Cliff Bleszinski, the original creator of the Gears of War franchise, has publicly endorsed the exclusivity decision, suggesting that Microsoft is “steering the ‘ship’ back in the right direction” with this move. The Coalition developers have expressed comfort with the exclusive arrangement, even acknowledging that it means reaching fewer players and potentially earning less revenue overall.

The decision represents a notable shift in Microsoft’s recent strategy of multi-platform releases. Whether this exclusivity signals a broader change in the company’s approach to releasing first-party titles remains to be seen.
