Gears of War: E-Day is making big changes to one of the series’ most iconic mechanics

The Coalition is developing Gears of War: E-Day with significant modernizations to the series’ foundational mechanics. Starting development from scratch, the studio aims to make the prequel more accessible to new players while retaining the core identity that longtime fans expect.

The most substantial changes involve character movement and environmental traversal. E-Day introduces a faster, more fluid movement system allowing Marcus Fenix and his squad to navigate obstacles and reposition during combat more organically than previous entries. The game includes a jump button for larger obstacles, but The Coalition deliberately avoided turning the experience into a platformer, instead blending the series’ traditional sticky cover-based gameplay with more intuitive, modern movement options.

Cover dynamics have undergone significant overhauls to feel less rigid and more responsive to dynamic combat situations. The developers have also refined shooting mechanics while preserving the iconic active reload system—a quick-time mechanic that rewards precise timing and remains central to the Gears formula.

These changes reflect The Coalition’s goal to create a faster, more accessible Gears of War without sacrificing the gameplay elements the franchise is known for. The overhaul positions E-Day as both an entry point for new players and a modernized experience for series veterans.
